Workshop Summary

Systematic, explicit phonics with penmanship and spelling?

Linking oral and written language skills at the time of acquisition is stressed throughout the presentation of subject matter in order to assure successful integrated performance in all four language modes: speaking, listening, reading, writing. Participants will be equipped with multiple models of instructional strategies, such as, multi-sensory practice, guided practice, think aloud, choral work, layering, classifying and sorting, and the appropriate sequence and pace of instruction.

In the Johnny Can Spell workshop, participants will closely examine the graphemes and phonemes of English, instructional strategies for penmanship and explicit phonics instruction, instructional strategies to teach how to sound out a word, review of a scope and sequence that links phonics, penmanship and spelling in integrated lessons, and a host of practical tips for a language teacher.

Workshop Goal

Johnny Can Spell Workshops and Johnny Can Write Workshops have a singular goal: To enable the teacher to provide his/her students with instruction in and practice of the phonological, syntactic, and semantic systems of English in a naturally integrated manner through classroom activities and lessons.

  3. Strategies and tips for teaching handwriting
  4. Strategies and tips for teaching the sounds of English explicitly
  5. Strategies and tips for teaching/practicing spelling rules
  6. Strategies to teach students how to sound out a word
  7. Think to Spell, a word analysis process used to introduce spelling/vocabulary
  8. An integrated scope and sequence for phonics, penmanship, and spelling
  9. How to implement the JCSpell phonetic approach to encoding/decoding and integrate it with existing language programs
  10. Instruction strategies that incorporate multi-sensory, direct instruction, and provide a high level of student engagement
  11. How to use simple assessment strategies
